Our Honest Opinion (We're Biased, But...)

We run a homestay in Kalimpong, so yes, we're biased. But we've lived in these hills for 20+ years and have sent many guests to Darjeeling too. Here's the truth:

Darjeeling is beautiful and famous for good reasons. The toy train is iconic. The views are stunning. The food scene is great. If you're a first-timer to Himalayan hills, you should experience it.

But Kalimpong is what Darjeeling was 30 years ago - before mass tourism, before commercialization, when it was actually about the mountains and peace, not about queuing for photos and paying premium prices.

So our advice? If time allows, do both. If you have to choose one - ask yourself: do you want to tick off famous spots, or do you want to actually experience Himalayan life?
